Reciprocal relationships in the brain-stem among afferent impulses from each jaw muscle on the cat.
In our previous papers1,2) it has been reported that spontaneous discharges of the trigeminal motor nucleus and mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus are accelerated by stretching an ipsilateral jaw muscle, and characteristic projections of the spindle afferent impulses from each masticatory muscle in these nuclei were observed. In she present experiment the functional interactions of the impulses f...
Auto-regulatory neuromechanism of the tongue muscle activity.
Tongue muscles are non-joint moving muscles and consist of extrinsic and intrinsic muscle groups. Contraction of the extrinsic tongue muscle group can produce fast movements of the tongue for protrusion, retraction or lateral deviation, and contraction of the intrinsic muscle group may produce a delicate change in shape of the tongue. The tongue is constantly in action during mastication, deglu...

Basic patterns of masticatory rhythm are generated by the intrinsic neuronal network, so called masticatory central pattern generator, in the brain stem, and are fine tuned in response to both peripheral feedback and central afferent inputs. It is well known that peripheral receptors responsible for the regulation of masticatory rhythm are distributed in the periodontium, lips, oral mucosa, jaw...
Regulation of jaw-specific isoforms of myosin-binding protein-C and tropomyosin in regenerating cat temporalis muscle innervated by limb fast and slow motor nerves.
Cat jaw-closing muscles are a distinct muscle allotype characterized by the expression of masticatory-specific myofibrillar proteins. Transplantation studies showed that expression of masticatory myosin heavy chain (m-MyHC) is promoted by fast motor nerves, but suppressed by slow motor nerves. We investigated whether masticatory myosin-binding protein-C (m-MBP-C) and masticatory tropomyosin (m-...
Neuromuscular control of prey capture in frogs.
While retaining a feeding apparatus that is surprisingly conservative morphologically, frogs as a group exhibit great variability in the biomechanics of tongue protraction during prey capture, which in turn is related to differences in neuromuscular control. In this paper, I address the following three questions. (1) How do frog tongues differ biomechanically? (2) What anatomical and physiologi...
Control Pathways from the Subcortical Limbic Structures to the Trigeminal Motor System in the Lower Brainstem: A Hodological Review
The organization of the emotion-related somatic motor behavior, including jaw movements, is governed not only by the cortical limbic system but also by the subcortical limbic system including the amygdala and hypothalamus. GABAergic neurons in the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA) and glutamatergic neurons in the posterior lateral hypothalamus (PLH) exert inhibitory and excitatory influences, re...
